Monday we arrived in John o Groats ! A fairly flat and uninteresting ride in – it was also very wet and grey with the odd rumble of thunder making it most unpleasant for cycling. Nevertheless, a milestone and huge relief to have finally made it to the far North – no more riding north until Kent ! Despite the weather there were quite a few onlookers cheering us as we arrived thinking that we had reached the end of our journey – sadly not even half way but it was encouraging even so. The next few days took us across the top out of Caithness and into Sutherland where the landscape changed dramatically from flat and dull to mountainous and spectacular scenery, winding our way past Thurso, Armadale, Bettyhill and Tongue onto Durness. The sun shone and the wind was light so the long steep climbs were rewarded at the top with some fantastic views and then very steep downhill runs right back to sea level – scary moments !! We left Durness Saturday morning and after a brief visit to the Cocoa Mountain – the best hot chocolate ever ! – turned South. The weather had changed and we pedalled hard into the teeth of a 50mph SW gale, icy sleet and hail not to mention a 3 mile very steep climb just to add to the misery of the day ! Oscar was a trooper and plodded along side, both of us finally reaching the top and our destination where there was a hot shower, food and bed waiting for us – bliss. Day off on Saturday and Sunday with old family friends at Ardmore School of Adventure with stunning views, peace, sunshine and plenty of lovely rest and food – the horrors of Saturday soon forgotten !
Now in Scourie and venturing to Ullapool by the end of the week.
Ready for a rest after a long walk up the hill !
The long and winding road !
Happy as ever – stick plus sea !
Lunchtime stop !
