Damp, drizzly Dorset – as we started the new week on a chilly, wet morning to ride to Wareham. Will the summer ever happen I asked myself as we arrived in Wareham wet through and looking as though we had spent the day in the car wash, not out on the bike ! However, the rain cleared and the evening was still and sunny with the treat of a meteor shower later on.
We then cycled past Corfe Castle the next day – busy with birthday celebrations for Enid Blyton – then over on the Studland Ferry to Sandbanks. The views over towards Poole Harbour were fantastic , the sea looking glassy in the still air, boats bobbing about not moving very fast but no doubt enjoying the warm sunny weather.
Cycling was unfortunately banned on the promenade during July and August so we walked the few miles along to Christchurch along the prom from Poole. The day was still, warm and sunny so it was packed with holiday makers all having fun and making the most of the seaside – a welcome change from the busy, noisy roads.
We were soon out of Dorset – the last of the bad hills behind us. It was then on to Lymington to stay with friends. I also met up with Steve ( from Dogfriendly ) and family for supper to celebrate his birthday !
I had booked the ferry from Lymington to the Isle of Wight intending to have a lovely picturesque ride across the island possibly stopping in Cowes to watch a bit of the sailing. However, once again the elements had another idea – it was foggy, wet and miserable with no view visible let alone seeing any boats out at sea ! All I could see was a few yards infront of me so it was a speedy ride to catch the ferry over to Portsmouth. I felt quite sad as I had been looking forward to spending the day exploring the island. Still, we have had a lovely weekend staying with some of my oldest friends near Chichester, being spoilt and catching up with news etc.
There was also the added treat of a day out on the water on their boat – a lovely day’s sailing. For once the weather was kind and apart from being stung by a lazy wasp a thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all. With just under 3 weeks to go now there are still many miles to go – no time for complacency ! Perhaps there might even be a glimmer of summer to help us on our way – you never know !
