We have made it into Bonnie Scotland, covering over 500 miles so far!
We made it to a village near Edinburgh – Longniddry – at the weekend which is where we used to live 38 years ago!! We stayed with lovely friends who used to be our next door neighbours so as you might imagine we have had a fabulous weekend reminiscing and visiting old friends and haunts !
After a good 4th week of fair winds and sunshine to help me on my way and some wonderful days exploring the beautiful Northumberland coastline (how lucky to have had such perfect weather for that part) we arrived in Scotland on Friday crossing the border post and on our way up North! The day was perfect and we arrived in Dunbar in good time. The route took us away from the dreaded A1 and through Eyemouth, Coldingham across the rolling border countryside (one very long and nasty climb!) then along the John Muir cycle way taking us straight into Dunbar.
The Royal Mackintosh Hotel was perfect and very near the beach so Oscar was a happy bunny! By a stroke of good luck found a sports physio who took a look at my knee which had been giving a fair amount of discomfort – however all well no real damage just suffering a little for its over use on the pedals. Some simple exercises and strapping seemed a small price to pay so fingers crossed it will get better over the next few weeks.
During the night I could hear the wind howling and Saturday morning was wet, cold and blowing hard – a complete contrast to the previous day! The ride to Longniddry was mercifully dry for the most part but the wind was not only bitter but gale force making progress almost impossible. There was a ferocious icy hailstorm which meant I had to get off the bike and turn my back to it till it passed – it was certainly a bleak moment but we emerged the other side and arrived somewhat waterlogged and frozen but delighted to have made it! Apart from the weather it was a fabulous ride down memory lane and still recognisable after 38 years!
We are now off into Edinburgh this morning to stay with the SANDS coordinator. I am heading off to Fife tomorrow across the Forth Bridge and onto Kirkcaldy.
Thank you to everyone who is following my progress & to those who have donated! We are now over the 10K mark on the fundraising page which is absolutely fantastic. Please keep sharing our story and we hope to smash the £25,000 target! http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/MaggieScorer
